Tyler Starr: 10/12 am, Walk along the North Side of Campus

Tyler Starr

12 October 2008 from 1200-1215

Location: A walk along the North side of campus from Belknap, between Smullin and Eaton, past the Star Trees, and North of the Art Building, and back

Weather: 53 ̊ F, no wind, mostly sunny skies, very autumn-like day

General: I was walking toward where I saw the squirrel carcass yesterday, but there was so much activity I decided to observe as I walked as well. I saw two chickadees hopping around on a conifer in between Smullin and Eaton. I wondered what they do on the trees, perhaps they are eating bugs that are up there as well. I was standing very still, and they came pretty close to me, but flew off as soon as I moved. There are tons of squirrels out right now, since the weather is nice and the campus is relatively quiet. I counted 9 on the way out, and on my way back I counted 10 (many were probably repeats). A small object dangling over the sidewalk caught my attention, and I realized it was a worm of sorts. It was about 1/8 of an inch or so, green, and segmented. It was hanging from a very thin string of silk. I took a picture of it on my hand. I wonder why it was hanging from the tree like that. I eventually made it to my destination, the squirrel carcass, but there was no real change. I did not see any of the baby squirrels. Yesterday during the day, I came over in search, but did not find them. However, last night as I was walking back to campus, I saw one of the baby squirrels. It was still docile; it let us pet it and pick it up.
