Squirrels, 9-21-2008

Time: 1709-1724
Climate: about 63 degrees, overcast, damp air
Location: In front of Shepherd House
Date: 21 September 2008
So recently i have noticed that in the morning and in the late afternoon there are many squirrels outside of my dorm, Shepherd House, where the squirrels contently search around for food and do not even flinch when a person comes close.  It is as though they are comfortable and used to people being around all the time.  However when you get too close or make noises at them they tend to run away very quickly.  Well i decided to come outside and observe them, seeing as how they are consistently here on a day to day basis at around the same time.  When i got outside there were in fact squirrels, what looked to be ground squirrels of some kind.  I could not identify them for sure but then when i looked across the street and over to Brown Field i notice another, larger squirrel.  Then i notice 2 more.  Two are by themselves off on their own and the other one is running around.  I walk across over to it and i am standing in between the squirrel and a tree.  I identify these squirrels as eastern grey squirrels.  The squirrel races over to the tree only leaving about a foot of room in between me and him.  I was shocked by this because usually squirrels would never get that close to a human.  I watch the squirrel for a while.  I am expecting it to just race up the tree and stay but i was wrong.  It races up the tree going around it in a sort of zig zag formation.  I can no longer see him as he is on the other side.  I walk to the other side and he is jumping from tree branch to tree branch and then stops and races back down and up another tree to the point that i cannot see him anymore.
