Tyler Starr: 10/01, Mill Stream

Tyler Starr

1 October 2008 from 1805-1820

Location: The south bank of the Mill Stream in front of the University Center

Weather: 72 ̊ F, mostly clear skies, little to no wind

General: I noticed the first major color change that I’ve seen this season. There is two of a particular bush, about 7 feet tall, whose leaves have changed almost completely red. At first I thought they were just red bushes, and being red-green colorblind, I didn’t notice a few patches of green leaves until someone else pointed them out to me. This shows that these two bushes have begun changing from green to red. The leaves that are red are desiccated and crumble easily, and will probably soon start falling. Other than that, I only really see 1 tree that has a very small amount of color change, from green to yellow. A few mallard ducks flew by, headed upstream. I never noticed before, but when they are flying, they make a sort of whistling sound. Four of them flew by me and landed in the water by the bridge to Jackson Plaza. Soon after, two of them took off and flew farther upstream. I also noticed an interesting conifer. It was about 5 or 6 feet tall, and its branches and needles were arranged in a sort of ascending spiral-like pattern.
