Tyler Starr: 10/11 pm, The Botanical Gardens

Tyler Starr

11 October 2008 from 1615-1630

Location: The Martha Springer Botanical Gardens

Weather: 57 ̊ F, 5-10 mph winds, sunny, clear skies

General: As I walked into the Gardens, I noticed a squirrel that looked less than full-grown. It was on top of a stump, and when I tried to come nearer, it scurried off into the bushes. Apparently, it was a little more knowledgeable of the present dangers than the baby squirrels we saw as a class on Friday. It looked quite a bit bigger too, but not as big as an adult squirrel. As I walked further into the Gardens, I noticed that there were many birds out today. I hadn’t noticed such a diversity of birds before. I sat on a bench by the fountain so as not to disturb the birds. I was not able to identify any birds apart from one mallard duck sitting in the stream (it seems as though most of left for their migration) and two chickadees chirping from a conifer by the stream. One bird that I was able to get a good glimpse of had a white or gray body, with a black chest and head, about the size of a chickadee. I was not able to find a match in the Field Guide though. I also saw what may have been a bushtit or similar bird hopping along the grass and in the bushes (see picture). I could see other birds in nearly every single tree I looked at, but for most of them, I could not get close enough to observe any identifying characteristics.
