25 October 2008: Linfield College

Driving from Willamette University, Salem, OR to Linfield College, Mcminnville, OR, USA

61 degrees, partly cloudy

Driving to Linfield College for the Willamette University football game, I notice the significant change in atmosphere throughout the drive. The closer I come to McMinnville and the father I get from Salem, the more rural, farm area there is. Before I can gather my thoughts, I become too captivated by my nature observations and I realize that I’m lost! I see now how easy it is to get lost out here, from where I’m driving (which I cannot tell you, because I haven’t the faintest idea) it seems as though there must be infinite miles of farmland. The colors that make up these parts are so drastically different than the greens and blues of Willamette Campus. As my eyes roll over the landscape outside my window, I see yellows and browns filling the images. Everything seems dry and cracking, the sun on the hay and the chipped paint of the barns, promote a parched, arid feeling to the community. These thoughts do not help me while trying to keep my cool on the direction I’m headed. Thinking back to Willamette, I see the freshness of the campus. The mill stream and the greenery really provide a lush environment for students to live in. The deserted stretches of land I am now looking at, remind me of how great Willamette really is.

Rose, you need to get out of the stifling city more often. This is fall. In the fall, many trees become colorful displays of LIFE and PROMISE as they lose their leaves and prepare for another season.

Fields have been harvested. They'll mostly remain empty until a new crop is growing there.

Seasons in rural Oregon are wonderful. Come on out and enjoy them.
